Knowledge is power. Understanding narcissistic abuse is the first step toward reclaiming your reality, your voice, and your life.
NARC INFO
What is Narcissistic Abuse?
Narcissistic abuse is a form of emotional and psychological manipulation that includes gaslighting, love-bombing, devaluation, discarding, and systematic erosion of the victim's identity, self-worth, and perception of reality.
Signs You May Be Experiencing Narcissistic Abuse
Constant self-doubt, walking on eggshells, feeling like you're 'going crazy,' isolation from friends and family, being told your feelings are wrong, cycles of idealization and devaluation, and chronic anxiety or hypervigilance.
The Impact on the Brain & Nervous System
Prolonged narcissistic abuse causes measurable changes in brain structure — shrinking the hippocampus (memory), enlarging the amygdala (fear response), and dysregulating the nervous system into chronic fight-or-flight. This is not weakness — it is a physiological response to sustained psychological harm.
Gaslighting & Reality Distortion
Gaslighting is a deliberate tactic used to make you question your own memory, perception, and sanity. Over time, it creates cognitive dissonance and learned helplessness. Recovery requires rebuilding trust in your own experience.
Trauma Bonding
Trauma bonds form through intermittent reinforcement — cycles of abuse followed by affection. This creates a powerful neurochemical attachment that makes leaving feel impossible. Understanding this is the first step to breaking free.
NARC Research
Emerging research in neuroscience and psychology continues to validate what survivors have always known — narcissistic abuse causes real, measurable harm to the brain and body.
- •Studies show prolonged emotional abuse shrinks the hippocampus by up to 10%, affecting memory and emotional regulation.
- •C-PTSD (Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) is increasingly recognized as a distinct diagnosis resulting from sustained relational trauma.
- •Art therapy has been shown to reduce cortisol levels and activate the parasympathetic nervous system, supporting recovery from trauma.
- •Somatic experiencing and body-based therapies are proving effective for releasing stored trauma that talk therapy alone cannot reach.
